Thinning and Lighting for Thinness and Lightnesses Sake

As being featured in the ongoing 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), what’s hot seems to be the pursuit of thin and light. With the introduction of Toshiba’s new 10” Excite X10 Android tablet—the world’s thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet at .3-inches and 1.18 pounds—the bar is being set even higher. But I’m left to wonder if thin and light is really what we want…

When the iPad 2 was introduced, what amazed me wasn’t its thinness or lightness in themselves, but the sleek and sexy look the thinning and lighting brought to it. I think the feeling the tablet gives when we hold it in our hands is far more important than mere numerical satisfaction of .3-inches, .34-inches, or whatever inch developers might introduce in the future. I’d rather look forward to the design of the iPad 3 than how thin it ends up being…
